Scraps

of a Patchwork

Sometime last winter, a family of ladybugs decided to move into our Atlanta apartment. Most stayed behind the blinds or in the walls, but one ladybug found its home on a dish cloth that a friend brought back from Stockholm several years earlier. Instead of putting the cloth to work, I kept it displayed in our kitchen window. And the ladybug lived contentedly on it for months, hovering perfectly centered in the first O of Stockhome.

“Do you know that ladybugs are supposed to bring good luck?” Fredo asked me one night while making dinner. We both smiled, because by this point, we were already preparing to relocate to Europe and were leaning seriously toward Denmark.

Our plan was to 1) pick a city, 2) book plane tickets, 3) sell all our stuff, 4) move to Europe, and 5) find a job that will allow us to live in Europe permanently. We chose Copenhagen, got tickets, sold everything (almost, except for a few or fifty things left in Fredo’s corner), and have been happily living here while trying to fulfill the last step.

Well, I am thrilled to announce that all 5 things have now been accomplished.

Fredo interviewed with a design company for about 6 weeks and finally received an official job offer on July 1. And as luck would have it, the company is based in Stockholm! We are still going through the visa paperwork and practicalities, but as far as we know, we will be moving to Stockholm at the beginning of August. And though we are to very sad to leave Copenhagen (I fell in love with this city), Fredo is excited to join an amazing design agency, and we are both excited to finally settle down here in Northern Europe.

So it is true, then - ladybugs do bring good luck!
